Best key for an harmonica for a college student?

would the key of C be the best type of harmonica to get for a student?

C is usually the best harmonica to start with but only because most tutorials and lesson materials are written for a C harp. That alone makes it a pretty good place to start.

If you’re planning to play straightharp (mostly tunes and melodies) then C is also a good key for that – tons of folk and gospel music is done in C and it’s a pretty decent sing-along key.

It’s not the favorite key of guitar players though which is why you hear so much pop, country, blues, rock, etc… in D G A and E (string players really like A and E). Orchestras like A too. Horn players like Bb and F and you’ll find a hefty chunk of jazz in those keys.

Best place to start though is C unless you’ve gotten a super deal on something else. Also look at quality instruments and not those sub $10 harmonicas out there. You’ll have a much easier go of it with a harp that answers to what you’re trying to do.

Personally, I prefer Hohner. Specifically the Marine Band 1896, Special 20, and Golden Melody models for 10-hole diatonic “blues harp” instruments. Other folks disagree and like other things.
