Guitar Lessons Newmarket Tremolo Technique by Rick Washbrook
The Tremolo Effect
Tremolo is a musical term used to describe a particular technique used with various instruments to obtain a “trembling” effect, usually with all bowed and plucked instruments.
Tremolo is well known as a classical guitar technique by using the thumb to play single bass notes concurrent with, or directly followed by rapid repetition of a higher notes played with the ring, middle and index fingers.
Another common use of the technique on one note (a reiteration) is in the playing of the mandolin. Once a string is plucked, the note decays very rapidly, but by playing the same note many times very rapidly, the illusion of a sustained note can be created.
Now I’m going to teach you how to use the tremolo technique to make you sound a note constant and fast when playing a scale, lick, or musical phrase. The tremolo effect can also have a very cool, heavy metal sound when using distortion on your amp. In any event, learning the tremolo effect will take time, but with practice and patience, people will be in awe of your guitar playing. Let’s get started.
The first step in learning to create a tremolo sound when playing your guitar is to learn how to alternately pick up and down very fast. To begin, take your pick and alternately pick one string in the traditional manner; pick down, pick up, pick down, pick up and so forth.
Use a metronome when learning to alternately pick fast and accurate to create the tremolo effect. Set the metronome at a slow tempo (low beats per minute – BPM) when you begin your practice session so you will be able to execute the alternate picking pattern in a relaxed manner.
Once you have set your metronome, play alternate picking with only 8th notes. This is called straight regimental playing. Focus only on down/up, down/up picking strokes, over and over. This may sound tedious and boring, but it is the first step in the learning process.
When you feel comfortable at the tempo you are at, turn the BPM up only one degree. It is important to move up slowly because you are training your muscle memory to be relaxed so one day You Can play very fast. Keep a log of your tempos and each day, go a little faster.
Another way to practice your tremolo alternate picking is to play triplets on each beat of the metronome. On the first metronome click you hear, say while playing, “one trip let.” The expression again is, “one trip let.” You are playing three notes per beat. Each beat gets an even distribution of three notes picked, which is called a triplet.
If you find that you are not able to pick the tremolo effect at the setting you are at on your metronome, turn it down. Don’t try to play too fast and mess everything up. This will create bad habits and your picking hand will get so tight, you won’t be able to move it relaxed and freely.
The key is to spend time on your slow settings. You may ask, why spend time on something you’re already good at? This is a very good question. The reason is why is because you can never go over the slow tempos too much in your life when practicing your music.
The more you review and practice your guitar playing at a slow tempo, the more you reinforce every minuscule motion your pick and hand makes. So, when you decide on your slow tempo and relaxed fast tempo, nurse these settings back and forth.
You will gradually train your muscle memory and be able to pick tremolo as fast as a Hummingbird can flap his wings. You will hear it like a blind man.
The key now to learning to start playing fast at a very low BPM setting on the metronome is to play a burst of speed for two bars and then return to the slower speed. The burst of speed is playing the tremolo double time based on your slow setting. Don’t strain yourself and your muscle memory.
Play relaxed at slow consistent tempos. It takes discipline to stay focused. The rewards are great if you can stay focused.
So now that you have a few ideas about how and why to do things and you are playing comfortably and accurately, you can increase your tempo speed. These are the things i point out to you at Music Lessons Newmarket, and York surrounding areas.
I want to give you some good advice. When choosing a tempo to alternate pick a note on the guitar, pick a tempo setting that you can easily play slowly with the metronome’s BPM setting. When you play that burst of double time speed to the metronome setting, make sure you can play it very well, and then slowly speed up a little each day. I do not advise you to jump up to a fast speeds because you think you are ready to do so.
If you do, it will undo all the hard preparation work you spent on training your muscle memory to be relaxed and you will also develop stress in your picking hand.
Fifty to 68 beats per minute is the magical setting you should begin with. It is scientifically proven by extensive research that not only the music from the baroque period was composed at these exact tempos, but this is also the tempo the brain can best understand and relax to learn a task very well. This is amazing information that should be taken seriously.
For example, in some book stores, Musak is pumped through the speakers at approximately 50 to 68 beats per minute. It is a great tempo for customers to read the title of the book and the info about the author. They are in such a relaxed, tranquil mindset; they are more inclined to buy the book. Yep, that’s the dog gone truth!
Now you can play the tremolo effect and slowly learn to play fast tremolo scales, simple phrases, riffs and long melody lines.
