New Movie: District 9

Peter Jackson has been keeping quiet about District 9 for a while. You know what I'm talking about – that new SciFi movie that he was fiddling around with.

It seems like he has decided to talk about his upcoming movie. In case you are wondering, this happened at Comic-Con this year. There was a D-9 panel at the beloved geek convention and Jackson revealed some interesting details. The man behind LoTR movie is not directing this one. This time, newbie Neil Blomkamp is at the helms. Gamers will remember him from the Halo movie debacle (note: he was great for the movie, it was disaster because of producers doing what they do best – messing it all up).

The movie is a new take on the whole alien invasion story-line. You're not going to get massive scores of little/big gray men blasting their way through D.C. Not at all. For one thing, the story is set in the Third World (Johannesburg, South Africa to be precise). Secondly, it looks like the all-set-to-invade folks showed up ... and were captured. And allocated to segregated land. That sort of means that they were not as advanced as humans, right?

Anyway, decades have passed and looks like humans want to get rid of the squatting aliens. And then, things get ugly. Yea, if you think normal human riots are bad, try facing a group of aliens that squirt goo on you. Incidentally, the goo turns you into one of them.

By the way, in case you were wondering, this movie probably won't be heavy-handed and preachy. After all, with a backdrop like that, you expect something arty and emotional. Nah, I can see lots of suspenseful action bits coming into this movie. Check out the videos on their site, it just looks like the story telling method will be different.

The movie is set for an August 14 release.
