Will Smith as John Hancock

I saw a teaser trailer for John Hancock this morning on the telly. Could have been BBC one.
There was also this funny interview with Will Smith.

I was intrigued. I must have been living on the moon because I have not heard about this movie.
So a bit of introduction.

John Hancock, is a dark comedy about a not-so-typical superhero. No pansy latex suits here. Think drunk hobo with great powers. Not that the man of hour (Will Smith) seems to be any good at saving anything.

It has such dark undertones in it that you have to admire them for breaking out of the typical superpower rut that recent movies seems to be stuck in. Will Smith seems to have a serious alcohol problem, he hooks up with some guy's wife and the original script had him getting drunk with an underage kid.

What's interesting about this movie is the director's willingness to try something; exploring vices of human, negative emotions and creating a hero out of ordinary people? Seems that way to me. I'm definitely going to watch this one.

I find it somewhat distressing that this movie, slated for a July 4th release, is
being  mellowed down in order to get a PG13 rating. You know, get the kiddies into cinema, make more moolah out of it. Nooooo! Please do not compromise.

The beauty of movies that cater to niche audience is the potential to create cult classics with die hard fans. And think about it, you won't forgo quality just to please everyone.
